Admitted MD Applicants

Congratulations and Welcome to Tufts!

Tufts University School of Medicine is a prestigious, highly selective medical school. The students we admit demonstrate high academic achievement, curiosity, drive, and a commitment to becoming skilled, compassionate clinicians.

We know that medical school is a serious commitment, and that choosing your program is a crucially important decision. We’re here to provide you with all the information you need to make the choice that’s right for you.

Contacting Current MD Students

If you have been admitted to the School of Medicine and would like to contact a current medical student to discuss your enrollment decision, please contact Associate Director Emily Condon for assistance. If you are particularly interested in contacting a student in a combined degree program, please mention that interest in your email.

Deferred Matriculation

Candidates who have accepted an offer of admission and are currently holding a position in the entering class may request to defer their matriculation for one year. Requests are considered on a case by case basis. The School of Medicine does not grant deferrals for more than one year, except to accommodate an applicant's two-year commitment to service in the Peace Corps or the Teach for America program.

Offers of Admission do not imply an option to defer matriculation and applicants should not assume that a request for deferred matriculation will be granted. However, the School of Medicine is committed to granting deferred matriculation to applicants who are engaged in active service in the Peace Corps or the Teach for American program, and those applicants can assume their request will be granted.

Applicants holding a position in the entering class may request a deferral by writing to Erin Flaherty, Associate Director of Admissions at erin.flaherty@tufts.edu. Requests should be received at least eight weeks prior to the original matriculation date.

If a request for a deferred matriculation is granted, the applicant must then decide whether to accept the deferred matriculation; doing so requires the applicant to surrender his or her position in the current entering class. If an applicant's request for deferred matriculation is granted, the applicant is prohibited from applying to other medical schools during the interim year and must still comply with the TUSM Acceptance Policy.

Acceptance Policy

Admitted applicants must comply with the Tufts University School of Medicine Acceptance Policy to hold their seat in the incoming class.

Tufts University School of Medicine Acceptance Policy:

Applicants admitted to Tufts University School of Medicine must review the guidelines and instructions regarding the AMCAS Choose Your Medical School Tool found on the Association of American Medical Colleges website.

Between Feb 19-April 30th applicants who have been admitted to Tufts University School of Medicine may select the ‘plan to enroll’ option. Until April 30th, applicants who choose the ‘plan to enroll’ option may continue to hold other acceptances, remain on waitlists, and continue to interview at other schools.

On April 30th applicants who have been admitted to Tufts University School of Medicine will have two options: ‘plan to enroll’ or ‘commit to enroll'. All applicants admitted to Tufts University School of Medicine must make one of these selections by/on April 30th. Admitted applicants who do not select Tufts University School of Medicine for either of these options must decline their offer/withdraw their application from Tufts. If they do not, Tufts University School of Medicine has the right to rescind their admissions offer.

  • Applicants who select ‘plan to enroll’ by April 30th must decline all other admissions offers but may remain on other school’s waitlists. (They may remain at ‘plan to enroll’ [with Tufts University School of Medicine selected] until they select ‘commit to enroll’)
  • Applicants who select ‘commit to enroll’ must decline all other admissions offers and withdraw from all waitlists. Selecting ‘commit to enroll’ means that you are committed to enrolling at Tufts University School of Medicine and no other school. It represents a final decision.

All applicants admitted to Tufts University School of Medicine must select the ‘commit to enroll’ option no later than 21 days prior to matriculation (this deadline is dependent on an applicant’s specific program start date). Again, when an applicant selects ‘commit to enroll’ they must decline all other offers and withdraw from all waitlists. If an applicant has not selected Tufts University School of Medicine as the ‘commit to enroll’ option 21 days prior to matriculation, Tufts University School of Medicine has the right to rescind their admissions offer.
