TUSM Faculty: Visiting Student Requests

Many faculty members receive requests from non-Tufts University School of Medicine students who want to do a rotation in their department. The following information provides the guidelines we employ when reviewing requests and scheduling external students for clerkships.  Please share this notice with your teaching faculty and administrators.

The TUSM Registrar’s Office oversees and administers all aspects of the Visiting Student Program. Eligible candidates must:

  • Be in their final year of medical school;
  • Be in good academic standing; and,
  • Currently enrolled at a school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

Additionally, our application requires additional supplemental information pertaining to immunizations and a current official transcript. Incomplete applications will not be processed.

Accepted students are scheduled for one-month elective rotations by the Registrar’s Office. Assignments are made on a space available basis after Tufts students have been scheduled.  With the exception of Baystate in Springfield, Massachusetts, customized rotation dates are not possible.  

Visiting students are limited to a maximum of three (3) four week clerkships and students remain registered at their own schools while participating in visiting electives.
