APPLICATION GUIDELINES

THIS APPLICATION IS ONLY FOR FOR FINAL YEAR STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THE M.D. PROGRAM OF LCME ACCREDITED MEDICAL SCHOOLS.

International students should contact our International Office at 617-636-0354 or go to the website, www.tufts.edu/med/iaffairs for more information.

Electives are four weeks long and are available, space permitting, to full-time students in good academic standing. Variation on the rotation dates is not possible.

Visiting students are limited to a maximum of three (3) four week clerkships.   Students remain registered at their own schools while participating in visiting electives.  They are not officially enrolled as students of Tufts University.

Scheduling of electives begins about two months prior to the start of a given rotation month.  Applications should not be sent any earlier than six months prior to the start of the desired rotation month.

When you have completed your part of the application form, please ask your Dean’s Office to do the same. The completed application including immunizations should then be sent along with a $50.00 non-refundable application processing fee made payable to the Trustees of Tufts College.  This fee is for each elective.  The deadline for completed applications is one month prior to the starting date of the elective block.

Incomplete applications will be returned to the applicant (this is any application missing any of the following): an official school transcript, proof of personal health coverage, the $50.00 processing fee check and completed immunization form).

Visiting students are subject to the same rules and regulations that apply to Tufts medical students.  Violation of any school policy may result in immediate withdrawal from the elective.  School policies are outlined in the Tufts University School of Medicine Student Handbook which is on line.

ATTENDANCE:  Attendance is mandatory on all rotations.  Students are allowed two excused absences for illness, taking board exams, etc.   Beyond that students must have permission from the course director and make up time missed.  If a student is ill, the student must contact the course director to say he/she will not be in that day.  If the student cannot get in touch with the service, the student will contact the school and the school will notify the service.

HOUSING:  TUSM does not provide temporary housing for visiting students.  It is strongly recommended that you make housing arrangements prior to arriving in the Boston area.  Housing can be expensive and difficult to find on a short-term basis.

You may drop a rotation up to one month before the rotation starts. Your request to drop a rotation must be in writing (may be faxed to 617/636-0432).

Please see the Tufts fourth year rotation calendar for your reference; please remember to indicate the Block(s) you are applying for on your application. We will process complete applications on a first come, first serve basis. Please do not call regarding the availability of an elective until you are sure we have received your application form. All applicants must provide the required immunization records that are listed in the Immunization Requirements document. Please contact the Student Advisory Health and Administration Office at (617) 636-2700 with any questions regarding these requirements.

Additional requirement for Baystate Medical Center electives:  All visiting students planning on applying for a rotation at Baystate Medical Center must complete the Baystate On-line 4th year clerkship application at the same time you submit your application to TUSM.  The on-line application is located at www.baystatehealth.com/medstudent/.

Thank you for your interest in coming to Tufts University School of Medicine.
