The Microbiology Media Kitchen was created in 1968 under the direction of Alla Korjagin, a Russian–German émigrée with a degree in chemistry, with oversight by Michael Malamy. This facility, beloved by faculty and scores of students and postdocs, faithfully and accurately prepared the media for all the labs in the department.
Our department offers an award to graduate students in honor of Alla's many contributions to our faculty, students, and trainees.
Alla was succeeded by Lyuba Zelickman, another Russian émigrée, who ran the facility until her retirement in 2008. The current director of the media kitchen is Perry Riggle, PhD, a fungal geneticist and talented teacher.
The Media Kitchen provides high quality culture medium and reagents to investigators across Tufts for use in microbiological experiments. Requests for specially formulated media can be honored.
