Memorial Service for Alvar Gustafson
A memorial service for Alvar Gustafson, Ph.D., who passed away on October 13th at the age of 72, will be held by his family on Saturday, January 12 at 1:30PM in the Old South Church at 645 Boylston Street, Boston, MA. The service will take place in the Main Sanctuary and is open to all members of the Tufts community. A reception will be held following the service in the Chapel.
Al was a beloved member of the Tufts family for nearly 45 years. He touched the lives of more than 10,000 students spanning the Schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and the Sackler School, most recently as a professor in the Department of Medical Education.
A true leader and generous collaborator, he was a prominent faculty member in the Department of Anatomy for many years and in 2007 became the Founding Director of the MS in Biomedical Sciences (MBS) program. He was not just the face, but the heart and soul of the program, and approached this position, which he held until his passing, as a proud and devoted “parent” to more than 1,000 students. Gifts made in Al's memory will support scholarships for MBS students, and can be made through this link: http://go.tufts.edu/gustafson.
Al also served as a thesis mentor or advisor for dozens of Ph.D. students, and over his decades as a faculty member, Al received numerous awards for being an outstanding educator. We were blessed to have enjoyed Al’s intellect, warmth, and altruism in the classroom and through his daily interactions with faculty, staff, and students.
We hope you can join us at this remembrance of a remarkable colleague, teacher and friend.
