Research synopsis

The one-carbon metabolic pathway in which folate and vitamin B12 plays a central role, is important in generation of nucleotide precursors for DNA and RNA synthesis, and methyl groups for biological methylation reactions. My research goal is to understand how nutrient status (deficiency and excess) and genetic variations in the one-carbon metabolic pathway influence the risk for chronic diseases. I am developing an animal model to study the adverse effect of excess folate and its interaction with low vitamin B12 status on cognitive outcomes such as learning and memory using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans.
