Natalie V. Zucker Research Grant

The Natalie V. Zucker Research Center for Women Scholars will be accepting applications for its nineteenth annual grant awards. Established through the generosity of Mrs. Natalie V. Zucker, the Center is devoted to furthering the research careers of female basic and clinical scientists at Tufts University School of Medicine and Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences. This is a request for applications for the Center's grants.

ELIGIBILITY: Junior faculty at TUSM/Sackler or the major affiliated hospitals (up to and inclusive of the rank of Assistant Professor) and postdoctorate fellows at TUSM/Sackler, or at major affiliated hospitals, who are engaged in basic or clinical research are eligible. Residents are eligible to apply. The applicant's mentor or Department Chair must support her request. Previous awardees are ineligible. Faculty members who are already principal investigators on RO1 grants or who have financial start-up packages for their laboratory are also ineligible.

AMOUNT OF AWARD: Individual awards of up to $10,000 will be given for either research projects or travel and training.

NATURE OF REQUEST: The awards are considered to be seed money. Applicants may request support for items or activities that will advance and benefit the applicant's own research career and professional stature. Examples include: purchasing a scientific instrument or services such as Next-Gen sequencing for your direct research; attending a research meeting; defraying tuition for scientific courses/additional degree; launching a pilot project; establishing a new research collaboration; or providing partial salary support for a research assistant. Funds may not be used as salary support for the award recipient.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selections are based upon the following three criteria, which are equally weighed:

  • academic potential of applicant: as judged by research experience to date and career plans;
  • research career advancement impact: i.e., how will this money affect the career development of the applicant?;
  • scientific merit: as judged by project description.

APPLICATION PROCESS: Please submit a PDF of the application that includes:

  • the completed application
  • up-to-date curriculum vitae
  • letter of support from mentor or Department Chair
  • budget: provide a detailed budget with budget justification and clarify any overlap with any other grants or institutional support.
