Applications Process

The Global Opportunities Portal

The Global Opportunities portal is a secure online database for collecting application materials and key travel information for Global Health participants. All global health eligibility and travel grant applications will go through this portal. The information in this portal forms the basis for Tufts University’s emergency response plan and communication strategy when responding to an emergency or critical incident abroad. Your use of this registry not only ensures that you receive the essential support needed from Tufts in a personal or location-specific emergency, but it gives you access to numerous useful benefits as you prepare for departure and during your time abroad. Contact Ms. Kimberley Burke for more information.

 Benefits and resources include:

  • Emergency travel medical coverage free of charge during approved travel abroad
  • Pre-departure destination information
  • Travel alerts and warnings from airport disruptions to security threats
  • Support from Tufts and our travel assistance provider in an emergency
  • Secure electronic storage of passport and visa copies

NOTE: Students who are accepted to the Global Health program only need to register their international travel in the Global Opportunities portal. They do NOT need to use the Tufts Travel Registry.

TUSM Global Health Travel Grants

To help students offset the cost of international travel associated with a global health experience, we offer partial funding through TUSM global health travel grants (made possible by endowments from generous donors). However, these grants are not intended to cover the entire cost of the global health experience. Students may also apply for other Tufts grants; however, those who accept other Tufts grants are not eligible to accept the TUSM Global Health Travel grant in addition.

All global health experiences supported by a TUSM travel grant are required to meet the following criteria:

  1. The proposed experience is in a resource-challenged setting or addresses the needs of disadvantaged populations. Student activities including clinical observerships/electives, research projects, APE or ILE projects should include resource-challenged or disadvantaged populations.
  2. There is an opportunity for cultural immersion.
  3. There is exposure to a healthcare system different from the U.S.
  4. There is an opportunity to learn about healthcare disparities and innovative solutions
