Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine

Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine specializes in providing clinical anesthesia, intensive care, and pain management services throughout the medical center both in and outside of the operating room. We are a large department with over forty faculty members many of whom have subspecialty training in cardiac anesthesia, critical care medicine, pediatric anesthesia, regional anesthesia, and obstetric anesthesia.

The department is home to our wonderful ACGME accredited anesthesiology residency program. Beginning 2023, our program will offer the full 4-years of categorical training in anesthesiology. This will include the base internship year and 3 years of comprehensive advanced anesthesia training. The program is approved to have a total of 40 residents (10-10-10-10).

The department is also host to two fellowship programs in adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology and critical care medicine respectively.

Excelling as an anesthesiologist not only requires superior knowledge and technical skills. It also calls for warmth, compassion, patience and clinical judgment to make the right decisions in urgent situations. In our anesthesiology department at Tufts Medical Center, we strive to instill all of the above through our comprehensive curriculum and robust training programs. We also offer clerkships for medical students and serve as a clinical site for certified registered nurse anesthesia programs.

Further details about our programs and application process are available on the Department of Anesthesiology website.

Clerkships Electives:

Elective rotations serve as an introduction to the specialty of anesthesiology under the direct supervision of our anesthesia staff physicians. The students will participate in and/or observe a variety of anesthetic cases of varied complexities. They will learn about basic preoperative evaluation, standard induction and maintenance techniques, basic airway management and postoperative pain management. There will be exposure to most anesthetic subspecialties, including obstetric anesthesia, cardiac anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, regional anesthesia and pain management.

Students will attend weekly departmental grand rounds and will join residents in their weekly didactic sessions. The students are required to present one case and participate in one oral exam at the end of the rotation. The amount of hands-on experience will vary for each students based on previous experience, degree of skill and interest and availability of appropriate clinical opportunities.

Residencies:

Tufts Medical Center's Anesthesiology Residency Program is a fully accredited three-year program that provides clinical and academic exposure to all specialty areas. The surgical case mix is skewed towards a complex and high risk referral base, resulting in challenging clinical experiences for the residents throughout the three years of training.

In spite of the complex, academic nature of the clinical experience at our institution, Tufts Medical Center and the Anesthesiology Residency are not overwhelming in size. As a result, the residency program and department have maintained the intimacy and familiarity amongst the staff and residents that fosters an environment for growth and learning. Over the years, residents and staff have chosen the department because of this unique mix of challenging work in a comfortable, supportive environment.

Tufts Medical Center also differs from many academic centers in that it provides adult, pediatric and obstetric care all under one roof. This offers our residents a considerable advantage of continuous exposure to these areas throughout their three years of training.

St. Elizabeth’s Department of Anesthesiology Pain Medicine provides the anesthetic management for a variety of surgical operations including cardiothoracic, neurologic, orthopedic, general, urologic, gynecologic, bariatric and obstetric procedures. In addition, the department devotes special interest to the areas of obstetric anesthesia and acute and chronic pain. State-of-the-art care for the expectant mother is provided by specialists in the Women's Health Pavilion. Our Pain Management Center provides a multidisciplinary approach to successful and rapid resolution of painful complaints.

There are two training programs within the department:

Maine Medical Center's Anesthesiology Residency is made up of a highly interactive group of attendings and residents who work hard and are exceptional at what they do. Each year, five new residents are accepted into the program that supports a total of twenty from intern to CA-3 years. This small number makes a tremendous impact on the volume of cases each resident takes the lead on, allowing them to hone their skills and build confidence early in their training.

Fellowships:

Tufts Medical Center has two fellowship programs:

  • Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship
  • Adult Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship
