Program Leadership

Dr. Rebecca Lufler (Director)

Dr. Rebecca Lufler is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Education. She currently serves as Co-Director of the TUSM Scholarly Project Program, Content Director for M1 and M2 Clinical Anatomy, and Co-Director of the M4 Clinical Anatomy Prosection course, while also teaching in 1st year PA, Dental, and graduate courses. Over her 15 years on TUSM faculty, she has experience in curriculum, accreditation, faculty development, and student ethics and promotion. As a faculty advisor for the Master’s in Biomedical Sciences program, Dr. Lufler has mentored over 70 pre-medical students. Dr. Lufler’s research includes innovations in medical education and curriculum, and leadership development in academic medicine.

Dr. Berri Jacque (Co-Director)

Dr. Berri Jacque is Chair of the Department of Medical Education at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) and teaches immunology in a number of professional programs (medical, dental, physician’s assistant, and MS in Biomedical Sciences). He also directs The Center for Science Education at TUSM which aims to bring biomedical learning to high school classrooms. Dr. Jacque completed his postdoctoral training in curriculum design and evaluation TUSM. He earned his PhD in immunology from Tufts Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, where his work focused on acute systemic inflammatory responses to infection.

Dr. Tony Gao 

Dr. Tony Gao is an Assistant Professor of Medical Education at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM). He earned a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University. He originally joined the TUSM Center for Science Education as a postdoctoral fellow, focusing on the development of online graduate courses for high school biology educators. He has also served as an Associate Director of Pre-College Programs for University College at Tufts as a manager of health sciences programs.

Dr. Liz Genné-Bacon

Dr. Liz Genné-Bacon is Associate Director of the TUSM Center for Science Education and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Education. Previously she worked as the Collections Specialist for pd|hub, a multi-institution effort to enhance professional development for trainees in STEMM. Dr. Genné-Bacon completed her postdoctoral training at the Center for Science Education at Tufts University School of Medicine, where her work focused on neuroscience curriculum development and strategies to help college instructors implement course-based research techniques. She earned a Ph.D. in Genetics from Yale University, where her research focused on the molecular neuroscience of stress and body weight regulation.

Valerie Solon

Valerie Solon is a Program Manager at Tufts University School of Medicine in the Center for Science Education (CSE) in the Department of Medical Education. After earning her B.S. and M.A.T. from Tufts University, she spent eight years teaching science in the Boston Public Schools before coming to the CSE. At the CSE, Valerie helps develop curricula and programming to support student STEM and health career awareness, health literacy, and confidence to pursue a career in STEM and medicine.
