On June 10, Tufts University School of Medicine recognized Peter Brodeur, PhD, GSB80, professor emeritus and former chair of medical education, by awarding him the prestigious Dean’s Medal. This accolade, the highest honor conferred by the school, acknowledges Brodeur’s remarkable 38-year tenure and his profound impact on the medical education of numerous Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) students.

"Peter Brodeur exemplifies the essence of what the Dean’s Medal stands for—loyalty, service, and generosity,” said Helen Boucher, the dean of the School of Medicine, who presented the award. “His enduring commitment to medical education, as well as his dedication to academic leadership, and his profound impact on students and teaching have left an indelible mark on our institution. We are immensely grateful for his 38 years of service and the lasting impact he has made on our community."

Brodeur’s journey at Tufts began in 1975 when he joined the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences as a PhD student specializing in Immunology. Upon earning his PhD in 1980, Brodeur undertook postdoctoral training in Molecular Immunology at the Fox Chase Cancer Center. He returned to TUSM in 1985 as an assistant professor of pathology and, from 1986 to 2009, he directed an NIH-funded lab, where he conducted groundbreaking research on antibody genetics and mentored seven PhD students.

In 2009, Brodeur shifted his focus towards the realm of medical education. This transition marked the beginning of a significant phase in his career, where he served as the director of the Division of Medical Education from 2013 to 2017. In 2018, Brodeur became the inaugural chair of the Department of Medical Education, a pivotal role encompassing the oversight of faculty responsible for educating students in the Medical, Physician Assistant, and MS in Biomedical Sciences programs. Under his leadership, the department flourished, driven by his dedication to growth and development.

Brodeur's dynamic teaching style, mentorship, and relentless dedication to curriculum development have earned him widespread admiration from both students and colleagues. This year alone, Brodeur was honored with the 2024 Distinguished Adjunct Faculty of the Year Award in the Physician Assistant Program and the Distinguished Career in Teaching Award from the MD Class of 2024. His remarkable teaching abilities have also been recognized through the Outstanding Lecturer award, which he has received for 14 consecutive years.

"Peter’s kindness and dedication to his students is unparalleled. He always goes above and beyond to ensure that students receive the best education and mentoring. His ability to connect with students and colleagues, and his altruism make him a beloved figure within our Tufts community,” said Berri Jacque, who succeeds Brodeur as chair of medical education.

The Dean’s Medal, established in 1996, honors individuals who exemplify loyalty, service, and generosity. It is the highest accolade given by a dean at Tufts University, awarded to those who have made significant contributions to their school and the broader community. Brodeur’s exemplary service and lasting impact on TUSM’s educational landscape firmly establish his legacy within the institution.
