Tufts Bachelor/MPH

The B/MPH program at Tufts University School of Medicine allows undergraduates to earn an MPH in an accelerated timeframe, making it ideal for students from various majors. B/MPH students can choose from different concentrations. Please note that modality (on-campus or online) differs depending on the concentration.

B/MPH Course Credit Structure

The Tufts MPH program requires 42 credits of coursework, including core, concentration, and elective courses, a 160-hour Applied Practice Experience (APE), and an Integrative Learning Experience (ILE). The B/MPH course credit structure enables students to complete these 42 credits during the undergraduate period plus one additional year of study. 

Six credits of approved coursework taken as undergraduates double-count toward both the MPH and the bachelor’s degree. To count toward the MPH, double-counted courses need to be graduate-level and be relevant to public health. These courses typically count as electives toward the MPH degree. 

An additional six credits of approved public health courses plus up to three credits of the Skills and Tools for Engaged Practice (STEP) course series are taken at Tufts University School of Medicine during the undergraduate period. These six to nine credits would only count toward the MPH degree. Typically, these are a mix of core and concentration requirements. 

Students officially matriculate into the MPH program after receiving their bachelor’s degree. They would have to complete 27 to 30 credits of coursework in their final year. For example, a student graduating with their bachelor’s degree at the end of the Spring semester would start full-time MPH coursework and take their remaining 27 to 30 credits of coursework in Summer, Fall, and Spring semesters. 

Courses Taken During the Undergraduate Program

As undergraduates, students in this combined degree will take four 3-credit graduate courses that will count toward the MPH degree. Two 3-credit courses double count toward both degrees. Two 3-credit courses count only toward the MPH degree. Students work with their academic advisors to determine which courses to take during this time.

  • Students must receive a B or better in each course they are transferring toward the MPH.
  • Undergraduate courses, even if they are cross-listed with a graduate course, will not be accepted toward the MPH degree. Instead, you must take the graduate-level version of the course.

All courses taken toward the MPH while in the undergraduate program are processed as transfer credit toward the MPH degree. The courses will be listed on the official transcript as transfer credit, and the grades will not be included in the calculation of the MPH GPA.

The courses that will count only toward the MPH do not count toward any undergraduate requirement and will not be part of the total undergraduate credits or the undergraduate GPA. Students are expected to meet with their undergraduate advisor to ensure that they will meet all undergraduate degree requirements.

Students are expected to meet with the B/MPH Faculty Lead, Laura Corlin, PhD, to determine course selection and ensure all policies and curriculum requirements are met.

Students are required to submit the Transcript Reconciliation Form after registering for their final semester in the undergraduate program. The deadline for the form varies each semester but will be no later than the last day of classes of the student’s final semester in the undergraduate program. The form must be submitted to the TUSM Graduate Program’s Registrar’s Office.

How to apply

Students can apply for the Bachelor’s/MPH combined degree program no earlier than the first semester their sophomore year, and the latest students should apply is by July 15 before their senior year. Junior and senior year applicants are urged to seek academic advising as early as possible. In unusual cases, a later application will be considered. GRE scores are not required.

The below are recommended deadlines in preparation to enroll in the MPH. Applications are processed on a rolling basis between one’s sophomore and senior year.

  • The earliest you can apply is the first semester of your sophomore year
  • The latest you should apply is by July 15 before your senior year

Personal Statement

Your personal statement is intended to give you the opportunity to submit a narrative describing your past education, experience, and current professional career objectives. Your statement should describe your:

  • Reasons for interest in public health
  • Reasons for interest in the Public Health programs at Tufts University
  • Career goals

Letters of Recommendation

Two letters of recommendation are required.

  • Recommendation letters may be submitted online (within the application) or by mail
  • Letters should be primarily academic in nature, and should mention the relationship of the applicant to the recommender so that their observations can be put into the proper context
  • Electronically submitted recommendations do not need to be followed up with paper recommendations
  • If mailed, letters of recommendation should be in a sealed envelope with the author’s signature across the seal and forwarded by you or the recommender to our address below

Transcripts

  • Copies of ALL undergraduate and graduate transcripts (e.g., EMT courses, study abroad, summer courses, post-bacc) are required for review
  • We accept both unofficial and official transcripts. Generally, your application will be processed sooner if you upload unofficial transcripts; this is also our preference. However, please note that if you decide to matriculate, you will be required to provide a final official transcript, with a date of undergraduate degree conferral, from Tufts University.

If you’re uploading an unofficial transcript to your application:

  • Copy/scan/screenshot your transcripts for each college/university attended
  • Upload all pages of your transcript(s) and one example of the back page to provide us with your university’s transcript key. This can be found on the back of your official transcript or on your registrar’s website.
  • PDF files are preferred but additional formats are accepted (e.g., .doc, .jpg,.tiff)
  • Scanned documents must be clearly legible and on standard U.S. 8.5” x 11” paper. Be sure no text is cut off when scanned

If you are sending official transcripts from your college or university:

  • Don’t upload anything in the transcripts section if you’re sending an official transcript. The system will inaccurately count this as your transcript, and review of your application will be delayed.
  • Official transcripts may be mailed via the U.S. Mail to our address at the bottom of this page, or electronically to ph.admissions@tufts.edu.
  • Transcripts are only considered official if they are sent directly from the registrar's office of your institution to our office in a sealed envelope. If you scan your official transcript to your application it becomes unofficial.

Please note the following:

  • If you received two degrees from the same institution that are on the same transcript, you will need to add the institution twice, one for each degree. Upload the transcript with one degree and for the other, upload a blank document. If you leave either transcript section empty, your application will be left as incomplete.
  • If you have any courses that are in progress or being completed in a future term, please provide documentation of this (e.g., a transcript that shows courses in progress)

Tuition Costs for the Bachelor/MPH Degree

The following tuition rates are for 2024–2025 academic year* and apply to Tufts undergraduate students enrolled in the combined Bachelor’s degree/Master of Public Health (B/MPH) program starting their career in the Public Health programs in Summer/Fall 2024.

Students enrolled in the dual B/MPH will be billed by the Public Health programs for two semesters (fall and spring) at the tuition rate listed above.

  • Tuition: $29,406 per semester (full-time, flat-rate)
  • Fees: $658 per semester

The current academic year's cost of attendance budget (including not only tuition, but room and board, health insurance, books etc.) is available from the Office of Financial Aid.

*These rates are subject to approval. Tuition rates and fees are effective as of July 2024. Note that program cost is set each academic year (June to May) and typically increases a small amount from year-to-year.
