Clerkship Electives:

The radiology clerkships in the third and fourth years emphasize direct interaction with clinical diagnostic imaging and image guided therapies. Students are both involved with staff and resident radiologists in image interpretation at the work-station as well as image guided procedures. Additionally, students receive didactic instruction through daily conferences and lectures.  Immersion in the radiology work flow enables students to gain a deeper understanding of both the scope and abilities of diagnostic imaging and helps prepare them for appropriate future utilization of imagine resources in their clinical careers. The clerkships also function to introduce interested students to radiology as a potential career pathway.

Residency:

Tufts Medical Center offers an ACGME accredited radiology residency program. As the primary clinical partner of Tufts University School of Medicine, the department is able to provide an academic experience rich in clinical and research excellence. 22 residents compliment 22 staff radiologists with representation of all imaging subspecialties. Individuals seeking a future career in either academics or private practice are well served by a structured curriculum with emphasis on clinical experience. Residents continue to place both locally and nationally in highly competitive fellowships.

The radiology department at Maine Medical Center performs over 170,000 exams per year, which includes about 25,000 CT scans, 17,000 vascular/interventional studies and 10,000 MRI exams. The department consists of 35 Diagnostic Radiologists with subspecialty expertise including angio/interventional, neuroradiology (CT, MR, myelography), nuclear medicine, abdominal imaging (CT, US), mammography, GI, GU, chest, musculoskeletal and pediatric radiology; 7 Radiation Oncologists; and 16 residents. Lahey’s Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program is also ACGME certified. Its residents consistently pass all steps of the boards, attain competitive fellowship positions, and acquire staff positions after residency or fellowship. Due to Lahey’s reputation as a renowned referral center for surgical subspecialties, residents are exposed to an exceptional, complex case load rivaling or surpassing other institutions. Lahey’s program is uniquely positioned to train excellent radiologists, whether they choose to enter private practice or go on to pursue academic careers.

Fellowships:

Tufts Medical Center Department of Radiology offers two fellowships:

Neuroradiology

A joint one year program with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center pools the resources of two large academic divisions to provide a strong experience for the future neuroradiologist. The fellowship provides training in the performance and interpretation of all aspects of neuroradiology including magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, myelography, arteriography, interventional neuroradiology procedures, vertebroplasty , spine pain procedures and head and neck radiology. The fellowship also provides training in advanced CNS imaging including quantitative MR spectroscopy, ASL, DSC and DCE perfusion MRI, fMRI and DTI, and CT perfusion and angiography. Fellows are supervised by staff neuroradiologists and are responsible for the performance and interpretation of all examinations under the supervision of staff neuroradiologists.

MRI Fellowship

The only formal MRI fellowship in Boston that provides training in neuro, musculoskeletal, and body MRI. The program is ideally suited for a career in private practice. The neuroradiology component draws upon the high volume wide range of both adult and pediatric pathology. Case demographics range from acute trauma, chronic disease, to bread and butter outpatient imaging. Regular interdisciplinary case conferences with neurosurgery, neurology, and ENT enhance the educational experience.

Fellowships sponsored within Lahey Clinic’s Department of Radiology are designed and offered on an individual basis. In the past, such offerings have included fellowship training in abdominal imaging, musculoskeletal imaging, and neuroradiology. Interventional neuroradiology fellowship training is also sponsored within the specialty section of Interventional Neuroradiology.
