Hillary Boucher, MPH23
"I spent my career working as a bench scientist and wanted to pivot my career in a new direction...the MPH allowed me to stay true to my science background and offer a wide variety of employment options."
Many students in our online Master of Public Health (MPH) program complete the program when planning to pivot their careers in other directions—and the flexibility that comes with an online mode of instruction makes it possible. Learn about Hillary Boucher, MPH23, Epidemiology-Statistics, and why she chose Tufts' online MPH program.
Why did you choose to pursue this degree?
"I always joke that I decided I needed an extra challenge because a new born and pandemic just didn't make life interesting enough. In reality, I spent my career working as a bench scientist and wanted to pivot my career in a new direction. I considered an MBA, a JD, but the MPH allowed me to stay true to my science background and offer a wide variety of employment options."
Why did you choose Tufts to pursue this degree?
"The flexibility of the program was important because it let me pursue this degree without throwing my life into chaos. The highly respected and brilliant professors, and the notoriety of Tufts were a big factor. One of the reason I chose Tufts’ program is for the fact is it so civic minded and has a socially conscious approach to health."
What has your experience it the online MPH program been like so far?
"In one word? Amazing. I've learned so much, made connections, found support—I can go on and on. The professors are brilliant instructors but also incredible people who care about the students and want to see you succeed."
What is your favorite aspect about the program?
"The knowledge I've gained is important, but the unexpected thing are the people. I've made some of the greatest connections. I have classmates that I talk to almost daily and who have become some of my best friends. With the professors, I feel like I've made life long professional connections and like I'll be able to contact them at any time in the future and they would be happy to help me with anything I need."
What has been your proudest accomplishment while being in the program?
"Getting good grades is great but more importantly I've learned so much and pushed myself outside of my comfort zone."
What do you wish to accomplish upon graduation?
"I am lucky enough to have already found a job that lets me use all the skills I've gained in this program. I hope to be able to make positive changes in my community. I want to expand on this education and build on it."
