Kaung Hein, DPT26
A personal trainer’s perspective on Tufts’ hybrid DPT program.

Meet Kaung Hein, DPT26, a current student in the Tufts DPT-Boston program. With a passion for understanding how the body moves and heals, Kaung chose the hybrid format to balance his career as a personal trainer while pursuing his academic goals. In this Q&A, Kaung shares his experiences with the program’s unique structure, how he manages coursework alongside hands-on practice, and how it’s preparing him for a career in physical therapy.
What motivated you to pursue a DPT degree and choose Tufts' hybrid program?
"I pursued a DPT degree because I enjoy solving complex problems and have always been fascinated by the human body's biomechanics and healing potential. I chose the Tufts DPT-Boston program because of its accelerated hybrid format, which allows me to reclaim valuable time. Since time and opportunity are two of the hardest things to get back in life, I appreciate that Tufts offers both, combining academic efficiency with exceptional faculty support in a seven-semester program."
How does the hybrid format fit with your learning style and goals?
"I enjoy the hybrid format because it offers flexibility to cut down on travel time, allowing me to continue working as a personal trainer. This gives me the unique opportunity to apply what I learn from both asynchronous lectures and synchronous classes directly to my clients. This real-time application enhances my retention and strengthens my clinical reasoning skills."
How do you balance online coursework with personal commitments?
"I’m currently balancing my personal training business with online coursework. What helps me stay on track is having a structured system that prioritizes health, academics, and business while effectively managing my time within those constraints. The hybrid model has allowed me to build a strong foundation in physical therapy concepts while continuing to gain real-world experience with my clients."
Have you faced challenges with the hybrid format, and how have you overcome them?
"Yes, when I first joined the program, I had doubts about whether a hybrid model would effectively prepare me for hands-on skills and keep me competitive with traditional students. However, seeing the well-structured in-person lab immersions and emphasis on clinical application reassured me. Engaging with faculty and classmates during synchronous sessions and seeking additional practice opportunities helped me overcome initial concerns."
How is the curriculum preparing you for a career in physical therapy?
"The curriculum provides a strong foundation in evidence-based practice, biomechanics, and therapeutic interventions. I’ve particularly enjoyed courses on manual therapy, gait analysis, and neuromuscular rehabilitation, which relate directly to my interest in strength and conditioning. My experience with motivational interviewing and ethical decision-making in clinical case discussions has also prepared me for real-world patient interactions."
How do the in-person clinical skills labs enhance your learning?
"The in-person lab immersions have already been invaluable. They allow me to practice hands-on skills, receive direct mentorship, and refine my manual therapy and gait analysis techniques. The lab immersion environment has also helped me build confidence and practice adapting treatment plans based on patient needs."
What advice would you give to someone considering the hybrid program?
"I would encourage them to assess their learning style. If they are self-motivated, organized, and willing to engage in both independent study and hands-on labs, this program is a great fit. I’d also emphasize the importance of time management and actively participating in discussions with the program's diverse faculty. The hybrid model offers flexibility without compromising quality, and in-person immersions ensure strong clinical skills before rotations."
