‘The Greatest Gift’: Education

Last summer, Stanley H. Konefal Jr., M75, D14P, and his wife, Joan M. Walsh-Konefal, D14P, traveled to Boston to meet Sebastiana Redford, MG 22, M26, a recipient of their endowed scholarship. Over lunch, Redford spoke about balancing rotations, exams, and residency plans, sharing how support toward her tuition was easing what would otherwise be an overwhelming burden of debt. “Hearing Sebastiana describe the impact of the gift confirmed our reasons for giving back,” Joan Konefal said.

The scholarship reflects the couple’s belief that the cost of medical education shouldn’t require students to sacrifice opportunities or alter their ambitions. As an alumnus and physician, Stanley Konefal has seen how debt can narrow career paths. “I knew a resident who wanted to become a thoracic surgeon but couldn’t because of enormous debt she had to begin repaying right away,” he said. “If we can help even one student, we hope that we are making a difference.”

For Redford, the support gave her the freedom to train without compromise. “Their scholarship has made it possible for me to immerse myself in research, service, and clinical training,” she said. “They have given me the greatest gift: my education."
