Lauren Wong, MPH23
"Attending the Tufts MPH program has been one of my best decisions. Not only do I love the Tufts community and the offered courses, but living in Boston is an incredible experience."
As a Tufts Public Health student, you'll find yourself at the center of Boston. Boston is a medical and health care hub perfect for growth and exploration. Hear about current student, Lauren Wong, MPH23, whose concentration is epidemiology-biostatistics.
Why did you choose to pursue this degree?
"My undergraduate degree was in physiology, and I minored in microbiology and dance. Most of the classes I took were foundational biology and chemistry courses. I have a passion for healthcare and research but wanted to learn more about how social science and natural science intertwine. I decided to pursue a degree in public health to learn more about social science and understand the healthcare system and disparities within healthcare and research."
What has your experience it the MPH program been like so far?
"The public health program at Tufts has been welcoming ever since I started my application. The community at Tufts was one of the determining factors in choosing to pursue my degree at Tufts. I also value that professors prioritize real-life applications in the learning process and focus on our overall understanding of course material. Tufts also offers many ways to become involved outside of the classroom, with annual apple picking trips (one of my favorites!), ice skating in the Boston Common, wellness presentations, and meditation activities. There are so many opportunities to get involved and spend time with your classmates! I would recommend this program time and time again. The professors and staff are incredible and make coming to campus exciting and welcoming."
What is your favorite aspect about the program?
"I cannot say enough good things about the welcoming community at Tufts. I was nervous that I would feel disconnected in graduate school because of the general idea that many graduate experiences can feel isolating. At Tufts, that is not the case! The faculty focus on creating an inviting program where you feel connected with peers and the university community. Community makes such a difference when pursuing a degree, especially since I moved to Boston on my own to pursue this degree!."
What has been your proudest accomplishment while being in the program?
"After the pandemic heavily impacted much of my undergraduate experience, I am thrilled to have found community within my program at Tufts. Professors and faculty also focus on creating balance and prioritizing mental health. This mindset and support from faculty have greatly improved my work-life balance in graduate school! Creating new friendships in a new city is another aspect of graduate school that makes me proud of my growth so far."
What do you wish to accomplish upon graduation?
"After graduation, I hope to attend medical school or pursue a career in public health research and analysis. My current research interests lie in maternal health and cancer epidemiology."
What do you want a prospective student to know about Tufts?
"Attending the Tufts MPH program has been one of my best decisions. Not only do I love the Tufts community and the offered courses, but living in Boston is an incredible experience. In Boston, there is so much to immerse yourself in! With Boston as a healthcare and research hub, I can't think of a better place to learn about public health!"
