Research/Areas of Interest
Heart failure is the most common cause of death in the United States. There is currently no cure for this disease and the available treatments can only slow the progression of this fatal condition. Ongoing research have shown that this disease is associated with increased systemic and local inflammation. In Dr Alcaide's lab we are trying to learn more about how inflammation in the heart can affect heart function so that we might find new drugs to treat or even prevent heart failure. My ongoing research if focused on the role of inflammation on cardiac fibrosis and hypertrophy during the progression of heart failure.
