About Our Department

Welcome from the Chair

John Leong

Welcome to the Department of Molecular Biology and Microbiology. Decades ago, I trained here as a postdoctoral fellow and had such a rewarding experience that I was excited to return as Chair in 2011. Collectively, our faculty address problems related to the genetics and molecular functions of microorganisms that are relevant to infection and health world-wide. Just as importantly, we strive to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for our faculty, students, postdoctoral trainees, and staff. Although we take our scientific endeavors very seriously, we are also grounded in collegiality and truly enjoy each other. We pride ourselves on an open and accepting culture that promotes inclusivity, diversity, and antiracism.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to improve global health by using molecular genetics and innovation to address fundamental and medically related problems in microbiology. Training is a core tenet of our approach, and our students, postdocs, and staff are key drivers of our scientific impact. We are committed to fostering a diverse scientific community and aim to improve our core values by promoting inclusivity, diversity, and antiracism. Our department was founded with community building, mentorship, and collaboration as central values, and we continue to prioritize this culture in our department. We believe that fostering an environment that welcomes a diversity of perspectives will lead to more innovative and impactful science.

Research Groups

Our faculty lead 19 research groups focused on the genetics and host - pathogen interaction of all types of microorganisms.

We have an active program for postdoctoral scholars and provide a rich training environment for PhD students and other trainees.
