National Family Medicine Organizations

American Academy of Family Physicians
The American Academy of Family Physicians is one of the largest national medical organizations, representing about 100,000 family physicians, family medicine residents and medical students nationwide. Founded in 1947, its mission has been to preserve and promote the science and art of Family Medicine and to ensure high-quality, cost-effective health care for patients of all ages.

Massachusetts Academy of Family Physicians
The Massachusetts Academy of Family Physicians (MassAFP) is a statewide professional association comprising 1000 Massachusetts’ physicians who specialize in Family Medicine. Total membership includes more than 1,500 family physicians, family medicine residents and medical students. The MassAFP is active legislatively on behalf of its members and its members’ patients. Because family physicians in Massachusetts believe all residents of the Commonwealth should have access to compassionate, high quality health care, the Academy closely monitors legislation that affects the access to and quality of patient health care.

Society of Teachers of Family Medicine
The Society of Teachers of Family medicine (STFM) was founded in 1967 to respond to the needs of family medicine educators. From a small beginning of 105 founding members, STFM has grown to a membership of nearly 5,000. Free, downloadable educational resources, presentations, statistics, and more are available in the Family Medicine Digital Resources Library.

Family Medicine Education Consortium
The Family Medicine Education Consortium (FMEC) is a not-for-profit corporation which supports the educational and scholarly needs of its members. The prime function of the Consortium is to encourage and support collaboration among our Family Medicine Residency Programs and Departments of Family Medicine. We also seek to create linkages with organizations interested in the growth of family medicine such as foundations, state agencies, and corporations with a special interest in strengthening primary care.

North American Primary Care Research Group
The North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) is a multidisciplinary organization for primary care researchers. Founded in 1972 and oriented to family medicine, NAPCRG welcomes members from all primary care generalist disciplines and related fields. NAPCRG advocates for primary care research through its support of the College of Family Physicians of Canada Section of Researchers and its membership in the Academic Family Medicine Organizations (AFMO).

Robert Graham Center
In July 1997, the AAFP Board of Directors approved the development of a "Center for Policy Studies in Family Practice and Primary Care" to be located in Washington, DC. It was envisioned that the Center would be responsible for research and analysis to inform deliberations of the Academy in its public policy work and to provide a family medicine perspective to policy deliberations in Washington, D.C.

World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA)
Wonca is made up of national colleges, academies or organizations concerned with the academic aspects of Family Medicine. The mission of Wonca is to improve the quality of life of the peoples of the world through defining and promoting its values, and by fostering and maintaining high standards of care in family medicine.
