Research in my laboratory is directed towards understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate pattern formation, morphogenesis and growth control, processes that underlie organogenesis. We currently study: 1) Drosophila leg and wing development to understand the patterning mechanisms that generate the proximodistal axis of developing limbs; 2) joint morphogenesis to understand the mechanisms that govern the balance of forces between epithelial cell-cell adhesion and actin-myosin contractility during epithelial morphogenesis; 3) thorax closure to understand mechanisms of planar cell polarity, oriented epithelial sheet migration and sealing of epithelial sheets. We use classical and genomic screening methodologies coupled with high resolution imaging techniques to identify and characterize novel genes and pathways that drive these processes.
