Fostering Entrepreneurial Skills in Biomedical Science
Bharat Burman, A06, M16, GBS16, establishes endowed fund to support social entrepreneurship and innovation.
At the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, students are prepared to drive discovery at the highest level. A new endowed fund ensures they are equally prepared to translate that work beyond the lab and into real-world impact.
The Burman Windsor Family Endowed Fund for Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation was established in December 2025 through a gift from triple Jumbo Bharat Burman, M.D., Ph.D., A06, M16, GBS16, and his wife, Alanna Windsor, M.D. The fund supports student-focused programming that complements scientific study with hands-on opportunities to explore entrepreneurship and the business of advancing research beyond the lab, echoing the arc of Burman’s own career—from oncology drug development at AstraZeneca to his current role at a biotech startup. For example, awards might support students in testing new concepts and developing early-stage projects. Workshops, pitch events, and mentorship connections with alumni and industry leaders provide exposure to the practical realities of advancing work, from early concepts to more developed approaches and pathways to development.
For many GSBS students, whose work can be highly specialized and independent, these experiences create opportunities for collaboration, skill-building, and the strategic and translational thinking required to extend work beyond the lab. By expanding access to entrepreneurial learning, the fund helps prepare the next generation of scientists to move discovery toward application—and ultimately, improve human health.
