Nicole Burd, PA/MPH27
"I value the longer patient visits, which allow for compassionate care and individualized treatment plans that take into account each patient’s lifestyle, background, and access to resources."

Meet Nicole Burd, PA/MPH27, a dedicated and passionate Physician Assistant (PA) and Master of Public Health (MPH) dual-degree student at Tufts University. Nicole’s journey to the PA profession was influenced by her desire to make a positive impact on the health and well-being of young people, much like the PA who mentored her in college. With a strong background in biochemistry and research, Burd found her calling in the PA/MPH dual program at Tufts, where she can blend clinical care with public health. In this spotlight, she shares her experiences, what drew her to Tufts, and her vision for her future in healthcare.
What inspired you to pursue a career as a Physician Assistant?
"My career aspiration is to advocate for and enhance the physical and mental well-being of young people—just as Amanda, my PA in college, did for me. I value the longer patient visits, which allow for compassionate care and individualized treatment plans that take into account each patient’s lifestyle, background, and access to resources. Being able to switch fields within this career will also enable me to continuously pursue my curiosity and grow as a provider."
Why did you choose Tufts University for your PA education?
"I chose Tufts University for my PA education because of its PA/MPH dual program, which provided a unique opportunity to integrate clinical practice with public health. The program’s strong track record of success, along with the wealth of opportunities available through Tufts' connections, resources, and prime location, made it the ideal choice for my education."
Can you tell us a little about your background before joining the PA program? How did it shape your decision to become a PA?
"I’ve always had an interest in health, but it took me several years to realize that the PA route was the right fit for me. In college, I developed a passion for biochemistry, which led me to work in research investigating the impact of COVID-19 on fetal and maternal health. I enjoyed presenting my published findings and discussing how they could inform future clinical care for pregnant individuals. As I explored more clinical roles through shadowing providers and building connections through my pre-health organization, I realized the PA profession aligns perfectly with my personal and career aspirations. Since starting the program, I’ve become even more confident in my decision."
What has been your most memorable moment during your time at Tufts so far?
"My most memorable moments at Tufts have been the meaningful connections I’ve built with both the students and faculty during my MPH and PA years."
How would you describe the academic rigor of the PA program at Tufts? What’s been the most challenging aspect of the curriculum?
"The Tufts PA program moves quickly, and we cover a lot of material every day. I have found that reviewing and synthesizing the information each day has led me to be very successful in the program so far. The most challenging part is finding a work-life balance — something I am continuing to work on. My wonderful support system and therapist have encouraged me to pursue my hobbies and try new things. Last year, I took guitar lessons, and this year, I’m taking salsa classes!"
What kind of support or mentorship have you received?
"I’ve felt incredibly supported since starting PA school. My cohort is very unified, and there’s a strong sense of encouragement. That support is reinforced by my mentor and faculty, who genuinely listen and advocate for us. I've felt valued and seen in this program, which has had a significant impact on my experience and boosted my confidence as both an individual and a student."
What areas of medicine are you most interested in pursuing as a PA, and why?
"I’m currently most interested in women’s health and internal medicine. I’m passionate about empowering women by improving health literacy and challenging harmful stigmas and expectations. In internal medicine, I enjoy the problem-solving aspect—piecing together a patient’s history, lab results, and clinical presentation to understand the bigger picture. Though I have these particular interests, I still plan to approach my clinical rotations with an open mind and a willingness to learn from every experience!"
If you had to describe the Tufts PA program in three words, what would they be?
"The Tufts PA program is uplifting, immersive, and vibrant."
