Why did you choose to pursue this degree?

"About two years ago, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I started a rural healthcare project in Peru with the aim of improving children’s oral health and nutritional conditions in underserved rural areas. While developing this project, I noticed the gaps in my public health care education. This is why I decided to do a master’s in public health in order to contribute to providing better oral health care services for my fellow countrymen."

Why did you choose Tufts to pursue this degree?

"The interdisciplinary nature of the Public Health program at Tufts was a key factor in my decision. The emphasis on prevention rather than solely treatment of health issues offered by the Population Health Promotion concentration resonated with my personal values. The aspect that most attracted me to the program was its focus on identifying and addressing health disparities, promoting health equity, and preventing diseases before they become widespread, particularly among vulnerable populations."

What has your experience it the online MPH program been like so far?

"So far, my experience in the program has been immensely rewarding, both academically and personally. The program's curriculum has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of public health, covering epidemiology, implementation science, health policy, program planning, and social determinants of health. The interdisciplinary approach and versatility of the program’s elective courses have allowed me to connect the different aspects of public health, fostering a holistic perspective on the complexities of health issues. A standout feature of my experience with the program is the fact that I am able to continue my oral health project as my Applied Practice Experience (APE). Integrating the theoretical knowledge gained in classes and applying it to my hands-on fieldwork has been priceless."

What is your favorite aspect about the program?

"My favorite aspect has been the sense of community within the program. Collaborating with fellow students, faculty, and professionals in the field from all over the world has surrounded me with a supportive and dynamic learning environment. The exchange of ideas, experiences, and perspectives has enriched my educational journey, fostering a collaborative spirit that is essential in the field of public health."

What has been your proudest accomplishment while being in the program?

"My proudest accomplishment has been that by the end of this degree, I will become a double Jumbo since I have a previous degree from the Master of Biomedical Sciences program, also from Tufts School of Medicine."

What do you wish to accomplish upon graduation?

"Upon graduation from this program, I want to lead and implement more community-based Interventions related to oral health and nutrition back in Peru. I would like to spearhead community-based health initiatives that address specific oral health and nutrition challenges that diverse rural populations face. This involves collaborating with local communities, understanding their unique needs, and implementing targeted interventions to enhance overall well-being."

What advice do you have for prospective students?

"Tufts offers more than just a world-class educational experience. It offers a family away from home, especially if you are not from Boston. Someone will always be willing and able to help you and guide you in any situation you might encounter during your journey here while making you feel safe and comfortable."
