Biography

Dr. Sarah Gilliland received her DPT from Chapman University and her MA and PhD in education from University of California at Irvine. She has publications and presentations in the areas of clinical reasoning and professional development in physical therapy education. Her research has been supported by the Foundation for Physical Therapy, Inc. (PODS Scholarships) and the Academy of Physical Therapy Education. Dr. Gilliland is chair of the Scholarship of Education SIG and has served on the board of directors for the APTA Academy of Education since 2019. She was recognized by the American Physical Therapy Association as an Emerging Leader in 2015 and received the Dorothy Briggs Memorial Scientific Inquiry Award in 2018. Dr. Gilliland received the 2019 Faculty of the Year award for the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at West Coast University.

Dr. Gilliland has taught courses throughout the physical therapy curriculum. She enjoys weaving clinical reasoning into her teaching from the start in the foundational anatomy courses. She has also taught courses in therapeutic exercise and wellness/ prevention. With prior experience as a personal trainer and coach (and currently as a Pilates instructor), Dr. Gilliland integrates knowledge across the spectrum of physical activity in her courses. Her true passion is getting to play a role in students' development into competent and caring physical therapists
