“We support Tufts because Tufts has been very supportive of us”

After five years of living abroad, John “Bill” Gallup, M55, J83P, chose to practice rural medicine, a decision that prompted moving his family to Salisbury, Connecticut. For 30 years, Bill provided pediatric care to communities in New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, frequently working late into the night to meet the needs of area families. Jean Harrington Gallup, J50, J83P, raised their three children, including Tufts graduate Cristin, J83, and later worked as a secretary at the Hotchkiss School.

The Gallups place great value on philanthropy. Bill—a founding board member of the Foundation for Community Health—and Jean support a number of local and national organizations. In addition to annual gifts to the Schools of Medicine and Arts and Sciences, they have established a charitable remainder trust and designated a portion of Bill’s IRA for scholarships at both schools.

Jean attended Tufts’ Jackson College on a scholarship, and both she and Bill believe they have a responsibility to pass on the opportunity she was given. “It’s important for us to give back because the need is great. It’s a serious concern when financial reasons prevent students from pursuing a degree.”
