Wellness Spotlight: Melissa Burgemeister
For Mental Health Awareness month, we asked our faculty regarding their methods for navigating their day and how they unwind after a long day/week.
Melissa Burgemeister is the Co-Director of Student Affairs and Assistant Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program with the Phoenix Cohort. She has over fifteen years of clinical practice in outpatient orthopedics and sports settings. Melissa has also been teaching in higher education, including athletic training, PTA, and DPT programs, since 2006. Her research interests include effective pedagogical strategies for enhancing student learning and student learning outcomes in DPT education.
What do you do in the mornings to set your intentions for the day?
I begin my day by reviewing my calendar and setting my daily top three to-dos. I choose three to be realistic at what can be accomplished in a day, often with minimal focus time. This provides me the opportunity to prioritize my time in ways that allow for accomplishment of professional and personal responsibilities. It also helps me remain focused if unexpected meetings or tasks arise. On days where my three to-dos are accomplished, I celebrate my accomplishment and try to accomplish more. On days where it is not accomplished, I shift what was not accomplished to the next day, but in order to do this effectively, I have to plan ahead and not procrastinate.
How do you balance the different aspects/dimensions of your life (school, family, physical health, personal life, etc.)?
This is still a work in process and ebbs and flows regularly. If you have it figured out, let’s connect!
What have you found to be helpful when coping with difficult situations?
In difficult situations know who your support system is and lean into them.
How do you de-stress? What is your go to when time is limited?
I de-stress by exercising. If time is limited, I try to schedule walking meetings to get me up and moving.
What do you do for fun and how do you fit it into your busy day?
Spending time with my family is a priority and I plan it into my schedule to make sure it happens.
What do you do to relax and unwind at the end of a long day/week?
This varies based on my mood. Family game night, outdoor adventures, baking, or chilling and binge watching a favorite show are just a few.
What advice would you give to your future self?
Develop healthy habits early in your professional career to set a good foundation for when stressful times occur throughout life.
