Students choose to enter the public health field for a myriad of reasons—hear from current student, Rabail Butt, MPH23, as she shares her background and gives us insights on her experience in the Tufts University Master of Public Health program.

Why did you choose to pursue this degree?
"Public health is a vast field and such a necessity in the world we are living in now. As an immigrant, I had negative experiences with getting therapy and services for my son, which I never wish on anyone. It opened my eyes to the reality that although, everyone in the United States seemingly may have access to all benefits available, in reality, it is so hard for some people to access them because of their background, race, or the color of their skin. I just want to do my little bit to make this world a better and more equitable place for everyone, and an MPH is just the degree to help me do that."

How has your experience in the program been so far?
"I have had a great experience so far in my first two semesters. I am learning so much and broadening my perspective. I got my medical degree from Pakistan and had never had a school experience in the United States. I am so glad I chose Tufts. The way classes are structured and run is great! The support system offered for every discipline, whether it be academic or otherwise, is incredible. I have made some amazing friends too—just a side bonus."

What is you favorite aspect about the program?
"Critical thinking is something I have never been encouraged to do throughout my academic life, especially growing up in the subcontinent, so I like that I can use my own thoughts and ideas in my classes and assignments. Another thing that has stood out to me throughout my classes is that I am not afraid to voice my opinions. There is no shame or judgment, everyone appreciates and respects each other even if they do not agree, especially around sensitive issues."

What is your proudest personal accomplishment while at Tufts?
"For me, I think getting into Tufts was an accomplishment in it of itself. But, for one of the courses, we had a semester long group assignment, and at the end of the final presentation, one of my group mates said that they had a great experience and learned so much from me. That felt great—knowing that I was able to help someone."

What do you want a prospective student to know about Tufts?
"Tufts is a great school. You will learn, enjoy, and experience a lot of good things academically and socially. Some courses may feel more challenging than others, but I would highly recommend to use all the services available to students. That is such a great way to get your bearings together, if you are struggling. Also, just know that there is a great sense of community—you will be happy you chose Tufts."
