For Tufts University’s School of Medicine Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Boston program, the 2025 Winter World University Games in Italy represented a groundbreaking opportunity—the chance for both a Tufts DPT faculty and student to provide medical care at one of the world’s most prestigious winter sports events. Held January 13-23, 2025, in Turin, the multi-sport competition brought together student-athletes from across the globe.

Tufts faculty member Robin Galley, PT, DPT, co-director of student affairs for the DPT Boston program, and student Riley Thorr joined Team USA’s medical staff, providing critical musculoskeletal care to elite athletes competing in alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, and snowboarding.

“This was such a huge opportunity for our program,” Galley said. “It’s not every day that our students get to engage with elite athletes at this scale, and it speaks to the quality and reputation of Tufts DPT that we were invited to participate in an event like this.”

The duo treated musculoskeletal injuries in athletes before and after their competitions. Together, they formed part of a medical team that traveled between competition venues, navigating the steep slopes of Bardonecchia, Italy, to provide care.

“This was an incredibly unique experience,” Galley said. “We had to ski to different competition venues in the mountains, which was a first for me. I’m used to wearing tennis shoes, not skis! We provided care early in the morning before training and again after competitions, using the in-between time to collaborate with the medical team on injuries and ensure paramedics were prepared if needed. Riley and I also had the opportunity to analyze athletes’ movements and imbalances on-site, directly linking them to injury risks. It was a valuable opportunity to apply clinical reasoning in real time.”

Thorr described her role in treating athletes and how she applied her DPT curriculum. “In the mornings before the athletes would head to the mountain for training or events, and in the afternoons when they returned, we hosted treatment hours where we performed lots of manual therapies and prescribed exercises to address new and lingering injuries,” she said. “This allowed me to practice a variety of manual therapies we’ve learned throughout our curriculum. I also built on my clinical internship experience to choose appropriate exercises and activities for the athletes based on their individual needs and presentations.”

One of Thorr’s most memorable moments came when she responded to an athlete’s fall during freestyle skiing training. As one of the first medical staff members on the scene, Thorr had to act quickly to support the skier.

“I was the first available medical staff to reach her on the mountain,” Thorr said. “Ski patrol had already arrived, so I was mostly there to support them, comfort the athlete, and help get her down the mountain. Although she couldn’t compete, she came out to watch her teammates, and I was able to check in with her throughout the week. It was a moment where I truly felt like I was making a difference.”

Galley reflected on Thorr’s growth during the event. “I enjoyed working with Riley and seeing her step outside of her comfort zone to really challenge herself in this environment,” Galley said. “Riley worked as a student PT, evaluating and treating athletes with various musculoskeletal issues under my direct supervision. Her contribution was invaluable, and she really jumped in and took opportunities to learn new skills and improve current ones. She learned so much and hopefully gained confidence as a practitioner. I would like to think it will certainly have a significant positive impact on her future.”

Thorr credited Galley’s mentorship for her successful experience. “Dr. Galley was amazing,” Thorr said. “She provided so much feedback after each athlete interaction, and during times when we weren’t working with athletes, she offered opportunities for me to practice different manual therapy techniques that I had limited experience with. Having Dr. Galley on this trip really helped boost my confidence, especially as I prepare for graduation and my future career.”

The trip highlighted the depth of the Tufts DPT program, which goes beyond classroom learning to offer real-world, hands-on experiences that equip students for the challenges of the profession. "Seeing Riley rise to the occasion in such a dynamic environment was truly fulfilling. It demonstrates how well-prepared our students are for high-performance settings," Galley said.

The camaraderie between athletes and medical staff also left a lasting impression on both Galley and Thorr. “What stood out to me was the respect and sportsmanship shown by the athletes,” Galley said. “I enjoyed the interaction between the different nations and the mutual respect and support that was wonderful to see.”

Thorr also valued the opportunity to network with other professionals in the field. “The opening ceremony was incredible. This was a unique event where all USA athletes, coaches, and medical personnel from every village were in the same place at the same time. I was able to meet and network with PTs and physicians from across the country and the world.”

For Thorr, the experience affirmed her commitment to a career in sports physical therapy. “I’ve known since the start of the program that I want to pursue a career in sports, and this experience has solidified that decision,” she said. “I plan to attend a sports PT residency after graduating from Tufts and obtaining my license, and I feel better prepared for my future following this trip.”

The 2025 World University Games offered an invaluable hands-on learning experience and showcased the global reach and excellence of Tufts DPT. By providing students with unique opportunities to work in diverse, high-impact environments, the program underscores Tufts DPT’s commitment to preparing the next generation of physical therapists for success.
