Maddy Lowdermilk, MBS23
"We are also given opportunities to get involved at Tufts and in the Boston community through service, leadership, and different student groups. It has also been such an inclusive and encouraging environment."
Our MBS program provides several opportunities in Boston for students to get into the community to volunteer, research, and get clinical exposure in ways that are meaningful to each student. Read about the ways that Maddy Lowdermilk, MBS23, has expanded her learning to outside of the classroom.
Why did you choose to pursue this degree?
"I chose to pursue a special master's degree because I wanted to strengthen my academic record and help prepare myself for medical school. I also wanted a chance to help show medical schools that I can handle the stress and rigor that comes with pursing a MD or DO degree."
Why did you choose Tufts to pursue this degree?
"I chose Tufts because I had heard great things from current MBS students. One of the most important aspects of the program for me was the non-competitive environment. The students are in the program together, not against each other. Tuft's advising and faculty give their students all the tools they need to excel in the program and in their studies beyond it. I also love the medical community in Boston and at Tufts, which was a major factor in my decision."
What has your experience been like for far in the MBS program?
"My experience in the MBS program has been absolutely amazing. The rigor of the academics has challenged and pushed me to grow as a student. I have always felt that the advisors and faculty are here because they want to be. They truly want all of their students to excel and reach their full potential. The program also provides several opportunities that help with MBS courses, MCAT/DAT, medical/dental school applications, and gap/glide year opportunities. The Tufts community has been extremely welcoming and encouraging during my journey to pursuing a career in medicine."
What is your favorite aspect about the program?
"My favorite aspect of the program is all of the opportunities given to the MBS students. Not only are we able to take courses with medical school rigor, but we are also given opportunities to get involved at Tufts and in the Boston community through service, leadership, and different student groups. It has also been such an inclusive and encouraging environment. There is a lot of interaction with and support from other students in the program."
What is your proudest personal accomplishment while at Tufts?
"My proudest personal accomplishment was organizing a week-long gift card drive for Pine Street Inn at Tufts. Pine Street Inn is a homeless shelter in South End, which is near the Tufts Boston campus. It was very rewarding to work with PHPD student senate and the Tufts community to help individuals that are experiencing housing insecurity."
What do you wish to accomplish upon graduation?
"During my gap year, I am very excited to be an intern for Boston Children's pediatric anesthesia clinical and research internship. I hope to learn more about the research and clinical aspects of medicine. I wish to accomplish my MBS thesis during this year and hopefully attend medical school in the fall of 2023."
What do you want a prospective student to know about Tufts?
"I would want a prospective student to know that Tufts is here to support you in every way they can as you pursue a career in medicine or dentistry. They want everyone to succeed and make sure their students have the necessary tools to help them attend a medical or dental school of their choice."
