Why I Chose a Master of Public Health: Insights from a Tufts University MPH Student
Helen Lam, MPH24, shares her journey as a Tufts MPH student focusing on population health promotion.
My journey towards pursuing a Master of Public Health (MPH) began during my undergraduate years as a Health Sciences student. At the time, I was not even aware that an MPH degree was an option. My initial interest in health stemmed from my desire to help others and make a difference in healthcare. As I delved deeper into my undergraduate studies, I realized that the field of public health offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on a population level—an insight that has stayed with me throughout my academic and professional career.
The Turning Point: Public Health Research During Undergraduate Studies
The turning point came during my undergraduate research experiences. I had the chance to work on projects that highlighted public health concerns, and this experience was transformative. It was during this time that I began to appreciate the interconnectedness of health systems, social determinants of health, and the vast inequalities in health outcomes. I quickly understood that public health was not just about treating illnesses, but about addressing the root causes of health disparities and promoting wellness for a wide population.
As I engaged in public health research, I saw firsthand how education, income, access to healthcare, and other social factors could affect people’s health in many profound ways. This exposure opened my eyes to the possibilities of working in public health, and it became clear to me that pursuing an MPH would equip me with the tools to help address these systemic issues.
A Year in the Workforce: Seeing Health Disparities Firsthand
After graduating with my undergraduate degree, I decided to gain more experience before returning to school. I worked full-time in clinical research, which further reinforced my desire to pursue an MPH. During this time, I became acutely aware of the health disparities that exist in clinical trials and how health outcomes often varied across different patient populations. I saw that certain groups—particularly marginalized communities—had limited access to the benefits of clinical trials, and their voices were often underrepresented in research.
Witnessing these disparities firsthand fueled my passion for public health even more. I realized that I wanted to be part of the solution, working to bridge the gaps in healthcare access and outcomes. My time in clinical research also made me realize that while clinical care is crucial, it is often public health interventions that can prevent illness and promote health equity on a larger scale.
Taking the Leap: Applying to MPH Programs and Choosing Tufts MPH
With these experiences solidifying my passion for public health, I decided to take the leap and apply to MPH programs. One of the things that attracted me to apply to MPH programs was its broad and flexible nature. Public health is a vast field, and an MPH offers numerous pathways for specialization. Whether it’s working in non-profits, hospitals, academic institutions, government agencies, or even the pharmaceutical industry, the degree provides the versatility to explore different career options. This flexibility was important to me, as it meant that I would not be siloed into one career path but would have the freedom to pursue various opportunities throughout my professional journey.
Particularly, I chose the Tufts MPH program because of the its commitment to addressing public health through a multidisciplinary evidence-based lens with an emphasis on social justice and equity. The diverse portfolio of professors in the Tufts MPH program was impressive. Also, its location in the heart of Boston was a plus.
Gaining Essential Skills from Tufts MPH: Data Analysis, Leadership, and Collaboration
The Tufts MPH program has provided me with essential skills that I know will be valuable in my future career. From learning quantitative and qualitative data analysis to gaining proficiency in coding, I have been able to build a robust skill set that will enable me to conduct meaningful research and contribute to evidence-based public health interventions. The ability to analyze data critically and translate findings into actionable policies is something I look forward to applying in real-world settings, particularly in efforts to reduce health disparities.
In addition to technical skills, the Tufts MPH program has fostered my leadership abilities and collaborative spirit. One of the most rewarding aspects of the program has been the opportunity to work with peers from diverse backgrounds. This collaborative environment has created a space for rich, dynamic discussions that have expanded my perspective on public health issues. Whether it's engaging in classroom discussions or working on group projects, I have learned as much from my peers as I have from my professors. These experiences have deepened my understanding of how public health issues affect different communities and have made me a more empathetic and informed public health practitioner.
Looking Ahead: A Future in Public Health Research
As I am in my last semester of the program, I have become increasingly passionate about public health research, particularly in health disparities. The professors at Tufts have been a source of inspiration for me, many of whom come from impressive backgrounds in public health research and practice. Their expertise and dedication to improving health outcomes for marginalized populations have motivated me to consider furthering my education after completing my MPH.
I have decided that my next step would be to pursue a PhD in Public Health or a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) to continue my research in this field. I am particularly interested in examining the social determinants of health and exploring interventions that can reduce inequities in healthcare access and outcomes. I want to build on the knowledge and skills I have gained in the MPH program to contribute to public health research that drives systemic change and improves the lives of underserved populations.
Overall, the Tufts MPH program has been a transformative experience for me, and it has reaffirmed my commitment to pursuing a career in public health. I look forward to continuing my education, advancing public health research, and working alongside passionate professionals who share my vision for a healthier, more equitable world.
