Research/Areas of Interest:

During my doctorate work in metabolic biology, I became interested in science education. My postdoctoral work at the Center for Science Education focuses on increasing student engagement in science—specifically in the areas of health and science literacy. My current projects include (1) developing curricular materials for our high school biomedical curriculum, The Great Diseases, and (2) developing and teaching professional development courses designed to help high school teachers learn the content and pedagogy behind the curriculum. At the high school level, my goals are twofold: to help students develop reasoning, critical thinking, and data interpretation skills within the healthcare space; and to help students establish trust in science by developing awareness of the scientific process and how it is regulated. At the teacher level, I am interested in the ways in which access to and quality of scientific professional development can be improved.
